Marian Newell
About usContact usMain pageTestimonialsResources Marian is a freelance writer, with a strong background in technical communication and past employers including the Ministry of Defence, GEC, DHL and AST Trans-Act. She works from Newell-Porter's office in South Ascot, providing our range of documentation services. She has an MA in Technical Authorship and is a Licentiate of the City and Guilds of London Institute (LCGI).

With extensive experience in the software and electronics sectors, Marian has produced a variety of manuals for users, system administrators, support staff and developers. She has created online help for a command-control-communication system and written brochures, datasheets, newsletters and press releases. More recently, she has begun to apply her experience to new subjects, including security systems and structural/horticultural maintenance.

Marian participates actively in her profession, nationally and internationally. She serves on the Council of the Institute of Scientific and Technical Communicators (ISTC) and edits its quarterly journal, Communicator. She contributed to an international project to identify regional differences in the English language, which was sponsored by the International Council for Technical Communication (INTECOM).

In 2007, she received the UK Technical Communication Award, Descriptive Class, for a Structural Manual for the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. She described this project in an article for the Summer 2008 Communicator.

In 2008, she received the Mike Austin Award for outstanding service to the ISTC. Her contribution encompassed a range of Council activities but most notably her work on Communicator, which she described in an article in the Autumn 2008 issue.

In 2009, she was invited to contribute articles on aspects of technical communication in the UK to two Australasian periodicals, Southern Communicator and the Words bulletin.
